The Business Development Division focuses on how to maximize the Port of Long Beach revenue opportunities and sustain market share growth, by engaging all customer segments, tracking industry trends, analyzing cargo data, identifying new business opportunities, anticipating market direction, and aligning our strategies to market conditions.
POSITION PROFILE Reporting to the Director of Business Development, the Assistant Director of Business Development is responsible for the development of business opportunities for Port facilities to ocean carriers, importers, exporters, NVOCC, 3PLs, and terminal operators, monitors market trends and technological developments, facilitates the development of foreign and domestic trade-related commerce, enforces Port lease and tariff compliance, and acts as primary contact for Port customers and supply chain partners. This position supports the Director with the management and administration of Division staff.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Provides direct and indirect supervision of all Business Development staff, assists with establishing goals and objectives, measuring performance, and ensuring an effective, customer-oriented service level is attained.
Occupies the number two position in the Division; assumes the responsibility for the Division in the Director's absence.
Assists the director with the management of the day-to-day responsibilities of the division including implementation of division policy; market research and Port data collection oversight; development of business opportunities and customer relations; tenant support; administration and enforcement of lease and tariff provisions; and the handling of division personnel issues.
Develops and implements the Business Development marketing plan to identify trends and recommend strategies to ensure the Port remains competitive in the domestic and international marketplace.
Manages outreach to customers in various business segments and to meet with high level management and build relationships, develop business opportunities, and gather market intelligence.
Meet with key customers in the U.S., Asia and Europe. Domestic or international travels are required.
Manages outreach to Port tenants and terminal operators to ensure excellent customer service practices, develop business relationships, and negotiate agreements.
Serves as secondary contact point and mediator for Port business development and Port customer issues.
Manages the coordination of industry activities such as luncheons, receptions, dinner meetings, etc., to promote Harbor customer appreciation and ensure client satisfaction.
Facilitates collaborative business practice improvements and staff training.
Conducts Port briefings for VIP industry and trade delegations to enhance their knowledge of Port facilities and services.
Represents the Port on trade and maritime-related organizations, boards and committees.
Trains and mentors staff; provides leadership with respect to career development.
Interviews and recommends employees for hire.
Plans, supervises and allocates resources.
Performs other duties as required.
EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE
Requirements for the position include:
Requires a Bachelor's Degree in Business, Economics, Marketing, International Marketing, International Trade, or business related disciplines.
A Master's Degree in in above disciplines is desirable.
Certificate in logistics supply chain programs is desirable.
A minimum seven years of management experience in the freight transportation industry with a focus on international trade and supply chain management in a complex fast-paced environment with a diverse workforce is required.
Experience working overseas is a plus.
Fluency in foreign language(s) desired.
Experience conducting market research related to the international transportation industry is required.
Sales, marketing, or pricing experience in the shipping industry is strongly desired.
Strong negotiation skills, political savvy, excellent client/customer relations skills and exceptional public speaking presentation skills are required.
Strong leadership background, with experience as a number one or number two management professional in a complex, similarly situated organization with comparable challenges and structure is expected.
A history of managing and successfully working with people from diverse backgrounds and areas of technical expertise is required.

Extensive knowledge of industrial transportation industry required, including knowledge of industry rules, regulations, and terminology.
Must have knowledge of advanced policies and procedures of port operations, port tariffs and port leasing.
Must have knowledge of transportation industry segments including ocean carriers, marine terminal operators, railroads, import, export, and trucking.
Must have knowledge of basic principles of marketing, strategic planning, budgeting and economic forecasting.
Must have knowledge of program development, administration and implementation techniques.
Must have knowledge of international trading systems, marketing trends and social customs.
Knowledge of supply chain and sales and contact management required.
Must be a hands-on manager with a broad working knowledge of management principles; strong technical knowledge; excellent business writing and presentation skills; and correct English usage, including spelling, grammar and punctuation.
