The primary responsibility of the Business Inclusion and Sustainability Coordinator/Purchasing Agent is to manage business inclusion and sustainability programs as they apply to procurement functions. This individual represents the department and MSU with professional and community organizations to promote utilization of diverse business suppliers and application of sustainable procurement practices. The position fosters engagement of all buying staff to support these programs. The Coordinator collaborates with campus stakeholders and external organizations to identify best practices and goals. The Coordinator partners with procurement staff to further develop and implement programs, and to prepare metrics and reports for internal and external use. This role will have responsibility for programmatic elements of Business Inclusion and Sustainability, chairing committees in these areas, collaboratively developing goals, reporting activity levels, managing the university’s Tier II program, and engaging with researchers and university administrators to complete Federal sub-contract reporting for campus contract and grant activities.
An additional responsibility of the Business Inclusion and Sustainability Coordinator/Purchasing Agent is to procure complex commodities requiring extensive knowledge and expertise. As Purchasing Agent, this position evaluates purchase requisitions; writes and solicits proposals; formulates specifications for complex and unique items; determines suppliers to be solicited for RFXs; conducts public bid openings; prepares and evaluates bid analyses; and approves the selected vendor. The Purchasing Agent negotiates prices, terms and conditions with suppliers, and writes, issues, and administers purchase orders for the University.
Communication and interaction are frequent with university staff, faculty, and administrators to promote business inclusion and sustainability; and to advise campus units concerning purchasing practices and policies. There is interaction with the accounts payable/invoice audit unit to resolve invoice discrepancies.
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Business or Communications with relevant course work in Purchasing, Materials Management and Inventory Control or related field; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in procurement-related business inclusion and sustainability program leadership, design, and implementation in large organizations; communication and outreach to business-supplier professional and community organizations; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
The successful candidate will have knowledge and experience building business relationships with national and regional organizations such as the Michigan Minority Supplier Development Council (MMSDC), Women's Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC), National Veteran's Supplier Development Council (NVSDC), Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), and the Sustainable Purchasing Leadership Council (SPLC). Through these relationships the position will design and implement programs and events for suppliers, the Purchasing Department, and other stakeholders to promote the established goals for business inclusion and sustainability. Frequent travel and public speaking are necessary in this role. The individual will demonstrate ability to work independently, manage time, and use effective presentation and interpersonal skills. They will possess supply chain knowledge of procurement, logistics, compliance management, import/export regulations, and professional commitment through certification as a CPM, CPSM, CSM, or CPPO and/or a certification as a supplier diversity or sustainability professional with an organization such as the Institute for Supply Management.
